Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a type of medical imaging that uses sound vibrations with an ultrasonic frequency to conduct diagnostic testing. High-frequency sound waves are used to create images of the internal structures in your body.

Most exams use a sonar device and are performed outside your body. Some exams place a device in your body, such as a transvaginal ultrasound, a pelvic ultrasound to examine a woman’s reproductive organs.

Ultrasound exams are used to test for and diagnose various medical complications.

Why is an ultrasound performed?

Your Associates in Women’s Health providers might use an ultrasound for various reasons, including to:

  • Check the thyroid gland
  • Diagnose certain cancers
  • Check for cell abnormalities
  • Evaluate a lump on the breast
  • Examine blood vessels and blood flow
  • Assist with a biopsy or a tumor treatment
  • Diagnose diseases, such as gallbladder disease
  • View a woman’s ovaries and uterus during pregnancy to examine the fetus

The Associates in Women’s Health team offer 3D and 4D imaging ultrasound picture packages and sneak-peek gender reveal ultrasounds for expectant mothers.

What are 3D and 4D imaging ultrasounds?

3D and 4D ultrasounds use sound waves to produce images of female pelvic organs. This allows detailed imaging of certain conditions and structures of the female pelvis.

3D and 4D ultrasounds can produce images of your baby inside your womb. The difference is that 3D ultrasounds produce three-dimensional images of your baby, while 4D ultrasounds create a video effect with live video to capture movement. The Associates in Women’s Health team provide 3D and 4D packages that can even let you see your baby’s face for the first time.

While some people prefer a surprise, most enjoy the sneak-peek gender reveal ultrasound, so they can plan ahead, knowing if they’re having a girl or a boy.
