NovaSure Q & A

Associates in Women's Health

What is NovaSure?

NovaSure is a quick, effective, endometrial ablation procedure designed to remove the uterine lining, called the endometrium, and reduce, and in some cases even stop, heavy menstrual bleeding.

Only women who no longer wish to have children should undergo a NovaSure procedure.

Heavy menstrual bleeding, for many women, is extremely painful and causes them to miss work, school, and other important life moments. NovaSure’s goal is to provide ongoing symptom relief.

Endometrial ablation is essentially destroying and removing the uterine lining using various methods, such as a laser, or a hot wire. The NovaSure system uses gentle radiofrequency energy and advanced, specially designed tools.

What can I expect during my NovaSure procedure?

During your NovaSure procedure, your doctor slightly opens your cervix and places a thin, flexible wand and a netting device in your uterus.

Next, the netting swells to fit the shape and size of your uterus. Safe, controlled radiofrequency energy passes through the netting for about 90 seconds.

The device is then carefully guided back into the wand and taken out of your uterus.

Your Associates in Women’s Health doctor will talk you through the procedure and make sure you know what to expect, and your questions have been answered.

What are the benefits of NovaSure?

NovaSure is quick, safe, simple, and effective. The actual procedure only takes around five minutes and can be performed in-office at any time during your menstrual cycle.

The Food and Drug Administration approved NovaSure in 2001, after more than 15 years of extensive clinical experience. There are no incisions and no external scarring in the procedure. Your uterus is left intact.

The success rate is impressive, and for women who have suffered from pain and disruptive heavy bleeding for years, the procedure can be positively life-changing.

If you suffer from heavy menstrual bleeding, and you no longer wish to have children, visit the Associates in Women’s Health to discuss if NovaSure is the right solution for you.
